Building a Culture of Resilience for the UMass Community
UPDATE: This event has been rescheduled from 9/15 as it has come to our attention that the original date took place on the evening before Yom Kippur on 9/16. This was an oversight on our part and we deeply apologize, and will keep working to do better.

Presented by Jim Helling, M.S.W., L.I.C.S.W.

The start of this academic year finds us challenged afresh to adjust our expectations and adapt to unwelcome circumstances. Public health concerns, systemic racism and entrenched socio-economic inequities, a deepening climate crisis and technology-driven acceleration of daily life, societal fragmentation, declining civility, intense competition and pressure to achieve…How can we be OK, individually and as a community, when things are clearly not OK?

Resilience researcher and lead SACL resilience trainer Jim Helling, LICSW, CMPC will present an operational model of resilience that provides a road map for actively coping with stress, building on existing strengths to grow toward success, and cultivating the vitalizing social connections that facilitate thriving. A rising tide of strength-based resilience at the community level lifts all individual boats of wellness, social solidarity and academic success. Creating a campus environment that highlights strengths and pulls for resilient responses to adversity promotes individual well-being and builds a culture of mutual respect and care that feeds forward to drive positive community development.

Join us for a new and promising social-ecological take on healthy responses to stress and adversity.
